Fellows Program

Purpose

The Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy (CESP) announces the inauguration of its Fellows Program for UM faculty. The program's purpose is to encourage inter-disciplinary research on environmental issues that concern the interaction of science and public policy. The program also seeks to create a dynamic environment for a collegial, intellectual exchange on an inter-disciplinary basis.

Eligibility

UM faculty members pursuing research on issues involving the interaction of environmental science and public policy are eligible to apply for the fellowship. Two fellows will be selected to be in residence at the CESP each semester. Fellows will be given released time from regular academic duties for the semester, and provided with research assistance and travel support and office space in the Center, if available.

Ongoing Participation

During their semester in residence, CESP fellows will be expected to participate in Center activities, including seminars and colloquia with visitors from other academic institutions and practice; providing visiting lectures in CESP courses; and sharing their research with others in informal settings. By the end of the semester, each fellow will be expected to complete and deliver a paper on some aspect of his research, to be published by the CESP or elsewhere. We hope that CESP fellows will continue to participate in Center activities after their fellowships are completed.

Visiting Scholars

CESP will also be sponsoring a visiting scholars program, bringing environmental experts from the U.S. and abroad to interact with UM students and faculty. Visiting scholars will be provided office space, computer and research assistance and a stipend. Faculty members from other institutions who are engaged in collaborative projects with CESP Fellows are eligible for appointment as visiting scholars.

Award Notification

The first CESP Fellowships will be awarded for the Fall 2004 semester.   Faculty members seeking CESP Fellowships for Fall 2004 must submit their applications by December 1, 2003; selection decisions will be made and communicated by January 28, 2004. Faculty seeking CESP Fellowships for the Spring 2005 semester must submit their applications by August 15, 2004; selection decisions will be made and communicated by September 15, 2004. (The application form is attached hereto .)   Fellows will be selected by the CESP Advisory Committee based on its assessment of the quality, relevance, and inter-disciplinary nature of the applicant's proposal, the likelihood of its successful completion, and its potential to complement and enhance the work of the CESP.
