Lecture Series
October 7 through October 14, 2004
The University of Miami's Center for Ecosystem Science & Policy
will convene a series of lectures on environmental policy surrounding the
presidential debate. Politics of the Environment will bring to campus a
distinguished group of current and former federal environmental policy-makers
to discuss environmental policy issues from drilling in the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge to protecting the health of our coral reef ecosystems.

First Fellow of the University
of Miami Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy
Dr. Daniel A. Griffith (Department of Geography & Regional Studies,
U. of Miami) has been named the first CESP Fellow of the University of Miami
Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy (CESP), and will be in residence
during the Spring 2005 semester. His research project is entitled "Pediatric
lead poisoning: shifting from secondary to primary intervention through
the use of geospatial analysis."

Iraq-AWARE
Iraq-AWARE is a joint effort between the Center for Ecosystem Science and
Policy, the Center for Wetlands at the University of Florida, and the University
of Basrah in southern Iraq. The purpose of this study is to develop a comprehensive
framework for a long-term program to address the competing problems of water
supply, energy generation, wetland loss and ecosystem degradation in the
Tigris-Euphrates watershed. For further information contact Dr.

The Pew Charitable Trust and the University of Miami announce a new collaboration in marine conservation and sustainable use of the oceans. The Pew Fellows Program, the most prominent marine fellows program in the world, was relocated to the Rosenstiel School in December 2003.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
UM joins the Punta Cana Ecological
Foundation Association and forms an innovative alliance to study tropical
environments. UM students, faculty and researchers will conduct important
research at a laboratory and field station located on a 10-acre site within
the 2,000-acre Punta Cana Ecological Reserve and adjacent to the Punta Cana
Resort and Club in the Dominican Republic. View
