Project: Biscayne Bay Coastal and Nearshore Community Baseline
Study to
Develop Biological Performance Measures. Sponsored by CIMAS, Rosenstiel
School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, Southeast Fisheries Science
Center, NOAA Fisheries and the U.S. Geological Survey, Center for Water
and Restoration Studies.
Description of Duties: A summer intern is needed primarily to
assist with
throw-trap sampling, identification of marine benthic taxa, and other
data
collection while in the field. The fieldwork will take place in western
Biscayne Bay (nearshore waters) between Chicken Key and Turkey Point.
In
addition to fieldwork, intern will assist with the sorting and
identification of the throw-trap samples (consisting of small fish and
macroinvertebrates), preservation of samples, and data entry. In addition
to this activity, the summer intern will provide support to a seabird
bycatch study by reviewing observer incidental-take records and helping
to
design a better data form.
Requirements: Applicant must have experience with the identification
of
marine nearshore fauna as well as a familiarity with the community
composition. In addition applicant must have experience snorkeling and
feel comfortable working in the water for long periods of time. Boating
experience is a plus.
Work Schedule and Pay: The internship will begin July 1st with
completion
expected in mid September. The work schedule will be full time from July
1st through August 26th and part time for the tentative dates of August
29th through September 16th. The pay is $9.00/hr through CIMAS (labor
pool).
