Dr. Beier, Sc.D., is a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (DEPH) and a faculty affiliated member of the Abess Center at the University of Miami (UM). Dr. Beier has 25 years research and training experience in global health. He specializes in the epidemiology and control of vector-borne diseases in developing countries, and has worked extensively in the Middle East (Egypt), Africa (Kenya, Mali, Eritrea, Tanzania, Mozambique) and the Latin America-Caribbean region (Trinidad and Costa Rica). His research involves field and laboratory studies on malaria, dengue, West Nile Virus, and in the past he has worked on leishmaniasis and filariasis. His current research focus is on vector-borne diseases in urban environments and the development of novel approaches for mosquito control. Dr. Beier has had continuous funding since 1988 through NIH (R01’s, U19 program projects, and training grants) and other projects (NSF, WHO, NASA, and DOD). He has published 210 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is on the editorial board of the Malaria Journal. Dr. Beier teaches a course in DEPH, Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Diseases," and another in the Abess Center, ECS 372: Special Topics in Ecosystem Science and Policy (Foundations of Infectious Disease Ecology, Control, and Policy). Since 1988, he has served as a mentor to 16 Postdoctoral Fellows and 18 PhD students, including many who now hold prominent public health-related positions in the U.S., Europe, Central America, and Africa.
