Phi Beta Kappa Lecture Presents Harvard Historian
Phi Beta Kappa and the Departments of History and Religious Studies will sponsor a lecture by Steven Shapin, professor of the history of science at Harvard University, on Monday, January 30, at 8 p.m. in the Wilder Auditorium of the James L. Knight Physics Building on the Coral Gables campus. Shapin is being presented as part of the Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Program and will speak on "The Way We Trust Now: The Authority of Science and the Character of the Scientist." Shapin's work probes the intersection of the history of science, the sociology of knowledge, and cultural history. The lecture is free and open to the University community. ECS Student Honored with Merit Award

Lara Yael Polansky has been awarded the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) annual Merit Award. The award is presented to an outstanding new member who embodies the NSCS mission: "Honoring and inspiring academic excellence and engaged citizenship for a lifetime." The award is a financial scholarship of $1,000 and is presented to only 50 new members from NSCS chapters across the nation. CESP congratulates Lara!

Workshop on Spatial Ecology: The Interplay Between Theory and Data

The Institute of Theoretical and Mathematical Ecology (ITME) at the University of Miami is an interdisciplinary venture being formed by faculty from the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences and from the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The workshop is the inaugural conference for the Institute and will be held at the Rosenstiel campus on Key Biscayne January 7-10, 2005.

First Fellow of the University of Miami Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy
Dr. Daniel A. Griffith (Department of Geography & Regional Studies, U. of Miami) has been named the first CESP Fellow of the University of Miami Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy (CESP), and will be in residence during the Spring 2005 semester. His research project is entitled "Pediatric lead poisoning: shifting from secondary to primary intervention through the use of geospatial analysis."
